　　As bacteriologist Lena (38) drives past a burning car, she hears a scream of a dying woman. Lena does not tell her boyfriend how much the incident distresses her, just as she does not talk about the stillbirth she recently had. Instead, she throws herself into her work, intrudes into the life of the deceased, begins an affair with the widower and gradually takes on the role of mother to their son. Her persistent insomnia causes her to lose control between dreams and reality. Finally she accepts the help of a whisperer and then finds her own way to cope with her loss

　　故事发生在第一次世界大战期间，英国联军和德军之间的战况日渐白热化，每天都有无数的士兵们含恨死去，年仅十六岁的莎士比亚（杰米·贝尔 Jamie Bell 饰）亦参与了这场战争，战场上伤痕累累的惨状给他的心灵蒙上了厚厚的阴影。　　某日，莎士比亚和一干战友们正在进行一项突袭任务，就在大家凝神鼻息偷偷前进之时，一股不知从何而来的神秘烟雾将他们包围。之后，一行人来到了德军的战壕内，然而这里了无生气，有的只是一具具死相及其恐怖的尸体。这里究竟发生了什么？莎士比亚所在的连队继续前进，诡异的事情不断发生，连队中亦不断的有人丧命，莎士比亚隐约觉得，在前方等待着他们的正是地狱的入口。

一如往常，护理师露西奔走于各个小儿科病房，BP机、哭喊声填满了她的崩溃日常。但今晚，有个小孩让她格外心力交瘁：四岁的亚当因营养不良入院观察，他妈妈海蓓卡执意要彻夜守在孩子身旁，偏偏她被法院裁定照顾失当，不得长时间探访。为了让拒绝进食的亚当乖乖吃饭，露西打算破例让她留下，岂料海蓓卡却想悄悄偷走亚当⋯⋯
